CRM is involved in surface finishing of metal parts produced by additive manufacturing since 2014. Large experience has been gathered on this topic in various projects, especially some granted by ESA.

This experience is now recognized out of the borders of Belgium. The well know and recognized publisher “techniques de l’ingénieur” asked CRM to write a paper aiming at a state of the art summary on the available methods to perform surface finishing of metal parts produced by additive manufacturing.

This article deals first with the surface state of parts produced by additive manufacturing. Then, the mechanical and chemical methods that can be used to perform the surface finishing are introduced. Commercial processes allowing improving the surface properties are also introduced. Finally, the perspectives linked to surface finishing of parts made by powder bed additive manufacturing are discussed.
