Context of the training
The CRM Group is an industrial research center contains 230 researchers and
technicians. It consists of the CRM (Centre for Research in Metallurgy) and AC&CS
division (Advanced Coatings & Construction Solutions) linked to ArcelorMittal.

The R&D activities of the CRM Group is dedicated to the steel industry, related to
metallurgy, associated coatings and materials, The CRM main objective is to make the link
between ideas and scientific developments with the market needs and industrialization of
new products. To meet this goal, our center has a unique configuration of equipment
combining laboratory scale and industrial scale pilot line.

Areas of expertise of this group include printed electronics on steel, coating for smart
surface and functionalities on steel. CRM AC&CS is one the unique research center
developing smart applications (IoT – Internet of Things) on metal. Especially an important
activity is growing on printed RFID on steel (radio frequency identification). An RFID tag is
composed of an RFID chip and an antenna, technology to be used for objects
identification and wireless communication. Nevertheless, RFID tags placed near objects
with high conductivity dramatically degrade the performance of RFID tags, due to
electromagnetic dipoles coupling.
Objectif of trainee is to develop an innovative tag antenna design for metallic object
application with printed electronic tools.

Responsability of the Trainee

  • Deep scientific literature related to RFID, state of the art on metal.
  • Propose literature antenna architecture working on metal, with reader configuration (mobile phone application can be a solution) and microchip.
  • Find a suitable dielectric and conductive ink material and analyse their physical (by inkjet, screen printing…)
  • Prepare of multilayer system, microchip and its connectivity to realise a prototype.C
  • Characterise RFID performances of the tags.

Trainees will be included in a dynamic partnership in Belgium (UCL, Multitel center,…)
